Abstract
This practical workshop explores balancing human agency in generative artificial intelligence (GAI)-informed writing instruction, examining key principles for ethically and effectively integrating GAI tools into the English academic writing classroom, drawing on our experience developing AI Supported Academic English Writing: Foundations. We illustrate how GAI can be incorporated into a traditional process-writing curriculum while maintaining student agency by using GAI as a tool to support rather than replace student writing. Rather than making direct corrections, GAI facilitates an error identification process where students analyze and reflect on areas for improvement before revising their work via a traditional peer-feedback activity.
