In this plenary, we begin by setting the stage for how authors are currently pressured to publish and the issues that this raises in terms of ethical and unethical practices at the individual and institutional levels. Next, we discuss possible solutions to this developing crisis in knowledge production, calling for greater sustainability in academic research practice that is more inclusive and representative of less-resourced authors and their contexts. In doing so, we review state-of-the-art research into questionable research practices (QRPs), not only by authors but by the other stakeholders that surround and influence them. We critique the current state of knowledge where individual authors are criticized for their behavior while the larger ecosystem that surrounds them is often presented without comment as the reality in which authors must function. Instead, we demonstrate the importance of viewing the publishing landscape as one socially shaped through the interactions of various institutions with not necessarily compatible goals. We conclude by sharing how authors can benefit from increased awareness of and sensitivity to these issues.

Expanding the Conversation about Questionable Research Practices: Promoting More Equal Representation (Plenary) Conference website: https://2025esbb.ndhu.edu.tw/ Theron Muller – Waseda University, JapanJohn Adamson – University of Niigata Prefecture, Japan 1 November, 2025, 9:30 – 10:00 Our Presentation Our Slides Abstract Globally, as scholars have faced increasing pressures to publish, there has been growing scrutiny of how […]

[5

post-163","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-past-conferences
["GET
